Cold at the top
Air has collected at the top of the radiator. Bleeding the radiator lets the air out so hot water can fill it. Use a radiator key with the heating off, then check the boiler pressure afterwards.
Cold at the bottom
A cold patch along the bottom usually means sludge, a build-up of rust and debris from inside the system, blocking the flow. Bleeding will not help. A powerflush cleans the system.
Cold in the middle
A radiator cold in the middle and warm at the top and bottom often has sludge building up in the centre. A powerflush or cleaning is likely to be needed.
Every radiator cold
If every radiator is cold, the problem is probably the boiler, pump or controls, not the radiators. A Gas Safe registered engineer can find out which.
