Age
Many boilers last around 10 to 15 years. Beyond that, parts can become hard to find and breakdowns more frequent.
Repeated breakdowns
If the same boiler needs repairs again and again, the repair bills can add up to more than a new boiler over a few years.
Rising bills
An older boiler can burn more gas for the same heat. A modern condensing boiler is usually much more efficient.
Safety
- A yellow or orange flame instead of blue.
- Black marks or soot around the boiler.
- A pilot light that keeps going out.
- Any sign of leaking gas or carbon monoxide: act at once (see our gas safety guide).
What to do
Ask a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at it. We tell you honestly whether a repair is worth it, and if a replacement is better we quote the whole job in writing.
