Banging or kettling
A noise like a kettle boiling is called kettling. It is usually limescale or sludge on the heat exchanger, or low water flow, and can damage the boiler. A service or a powerflush often cures it.
Gurgling or whistling
Gurgling often means air in the system or low pressure, which can be fixed by bleeding radiators and re-pressurising. Whistling can mean low pressure, a failing pump or a restriction.
Humming or vibrating
A humming or vibrating boiler can mean a failing pump or a fan problem.
When to call
If a noise continues after you have checked the pressure and bled the radiators, call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not ignore it: small faults get worse.
